General Practice Data for Planning and Research
NHS Digital recently announced some changes to the way they collect data from GP surgeries to help them plan services and research potential new treatments.
The information collected during this process is Pseudonymised (your personal information is replaced with unique codes using special software) and helps to ensure that treatment you receive is safe and effective, as well as helping the NHS to improve health and care services for everyone by collecting patient data that can be used to help the NHS to:
- Monitor the long-term safety and effectiveness of care
- Plan how to deliver better health and care services
- Prevent the spread of infectious diseases
- Identify new treatment and medicines through health research
This information is already shared for these purposes (where a patient hasn't already opted out), but the new collection will be more efficient and effective. Pseudonymised information can be reversed to show personal information, but only where there is legal justification to do so.

If you wish to opt-out of NHS Digital collecting information from your GP Practice, you can do this by collecting a form from the Practice, completing it and returning it the Practice for us to update your record by 23rd June 2021.
Alternatively, you can opt-out online through the NHS website (external link) or via telephone by calling 0300 303 5678, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
This is called a Type 1 opt-out and would mean that no information will be shared with NHS Digital.
Opt-outs received after the 23rd June 2021 will still be processed but we cannot guarantee that they will be processed by 1st July 2021 - this means that your information will still be collected by NHS Digital until your opt-out is processed.
